Carbon Capture or Carbon Fiction? Science, Policy, and the UK’s Methane Blind Spot

26 March 2026 17:45-20:45, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
An evening event organised by the South East Region of the Analytical Community in collaboration with the Marketing Group and the Kent and Bristol & West Local Sections.

Is UK climate policy sufficiently grounded in science—or is this receiving inadequate attention due to previous policy decisions? In this timely and provocative lecture, Dr Andrew Boswell takes a critical look at the UK’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategy. He highlights powerful new academic research based on first principles carbon lifecycle modelling, which reveals that emissions from gas-fired electricity and blue hydrogen production are significantly higher than current government estimates. This is primarily due to emissions of methane, a much greater climate forcer than carbon dioxide. The analysis of released carbon dioxide and methane production will be discussed. Combined with satellite evidence of widespread fugitive methane leaks across natural gas supply chains, the case for review of current assumptions is compelling. Dr Boswell is a Chemist with significant expertise in Computational Modelling and is keen to discuss the emerging science for implications in policy and planning decisions. His work in the planning system prompted the inclusion of upstream methane emissions in the environmental assessment of a CCS project in Teesside.  He is now leading a national campaign for science-led CCS policy and work suggests reconsideration of new gas-based CCS in the UK Climate Plan.

This will be a Hybrid meeting comprising a Physical talk at Burlington House alongside a simultaneous and recorded Webinar transmission for attendees online.
A Networking session with wine, coffee and juice will follow the talk, which is free to attend.
