Food packaging has a significant role in ensuring safety and quality of food through the distribution chain i.e., from farm to fork. Intelligent food packaging can effectively communicate relevant quality status of the packaged food items to consumers. This special issue aims to cover various emerging technologies involved in the development of biopolymer based intelligent food packaging systems, which have been researched profusely in recent years. The topic of the special issue is contemporary, and the common themes cover all the aspects of using biopolymers and functional active/intelligent agents particularly obtained from natural and sustainable resources like agro-food wastes in intelligent food packaging systems. Agro and food waste valorisation, food safety, human wellbeing, economic development, and environmental protection are primary emphasis of the special issue. In recent years, the numbers of scientific publications in this area of intelligent food packaging have increased significantly. Intelligent food packaging being multidimensional topics, require contribution from diverse expertise on the relevant themes. This special issue will publish research and review articles in the following areas:
All manuscripts should be prepared according to our article guidelines and submitted via our online system. They will be subject to the usual initial assessment and peer review processes as necessary, and inclusion in the Collection will be at the discretion of the Guest Editors. Please indicate in your submission that you are submitting to this Collection and inform the Editorial Office by email. Following our peer-review process, we will publish accepted articles online in a citeable form as soon as they are ready, with compilation and promotion of the complete collection in early 2026.
