Brian Sheldon
Brown University
Biography
Brian W Sheldon is Professor of Engineering at Brown University. He received his S.B. in Chemical Engineering and Sc.D. in Materials Science and Engineering (Ceramics), both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining Brown, he held research staff positions at Amoco Oil Company and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
He has also served as a Visiting Professor at MIT, an Invited Visiting Professor at the Insitut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (Toulouse, France), and as the Director of the GM Collaborative Research Lab and Medtronic Collaborative Research Lab (both at Brown).
For the last two decades, his research has focused on understanding coupled chemical and mechanical phenomena in a variety of materials. This includes substantial efforts on energy storage materials, to address degradation mechanisms in electrode materials, solid electrolytes, and at reactive interfaces (e.g., solid electrolyte interphases, etc). He also has long-standing research interests in the processing and mechanical behavior of ceramic nanocomposites and thin film materials.
