45th National Convention of the South African Chemical Institute (SACI-45)

30 November 2025 12:00 - 5 December 2025 13:00, Johannesburg, South Africa

Introduction
45th National Convention of the South African Chemical Institute (SACI-45) is a prestigious and long-standing series of scientific meetings that have been held triennially. SACI-45 will showcase the vibrancy and diversity of chemical sciences in South Africa and beyond. This unique event is a testament to the innovative and collaborative spirit of the chemical sciences community on the continent. The theme for the conference is “Chemistry: A Window For Change”, and it accentuates the transformative role of chemistry in addressing global challenges and fostering innovation for the change needed for a sustainable future.

The convention will feature plenary addresses, invited, keynote, and contributed presentations, fostering dialogue and collaboration among scientists from various chemistry-related disciplines. SACI-45 serves as a vital platform for local and international chemists, including postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professionals from Higher Education Institutions, Research Councils, and Industry, to present groundbreaking research, exchange ideas, and forge new connections. This convention is the premier event of the Institute, with more than 100 oral presentations and is expected to host approximately 400 delegates.

Special Sessions

Chemistry Entrepreneurship: SACI-45 will host at least one special session dedicated to young scientists, including a session on Chemistry Entrepreneurship to be led by Dr David Fine (who invented airport explosives/narcotics sensors, etc.). This session will feature successful young chemistry entrepreneurs who will share their insights on transitioning from the laboratory to building a thriving commercial enterprise.

Quantum Sciences: In honour of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, SACI-45 will host a special session dedicated to quantum sciences. This session will explore a range of topics, from fundamental quantum processes to advanced quantum tools applied in chemistry, including imaging, sensing, computational techniques etc.
