Patent Masterclass for Chemists and Biologists

12 November 2025 10:00 - 13 November 2025 16:00

Introduction
R&D chemists, biologists and engineers involved in new product, service or process development should have a fundamental understanding of what intellectual property rights are key to their technology and business.  By securing legal protection for their creative activities, such as patent protection, they can prevent competitors from copying their inventions and so maximise the return on their investment.

If you are an R&D scientist, program manager or business development professional working in the chemical or bio/biotech industries, such as Life Sciences and Pharma, then this two day course is for you!

The first day of the course provides an overview of the most relevant intellectual property rights for chemists and biologists, the patenting process, and how to read a patent and interpret claims.  We'll then take a deep dive into invention capture, drafting and prosecuting the patent application to grant, IP strategy and management on the second day.  Our draft agenda is shown below:

Day 1: 3 hours
  • Overview of IP rights (e.g., patents, copyright, designs and trade secrets)
  • The Value of IP rights
  • Protecting your IP rights (e.g. patents, trade secrets, designs)
  • The Patenting Process (from idea to grant of a patent) in the UK, Europe and USA)
  • Examples of chemical & biological patents and claims (e.g., small molecules, antibodies, nucleic acids, processes, devices)
  • Claiming Priority
  • Patent Term and Patent Term Extension
  • The European Unitary Patent
  • How to read a Patent and Interpret Claims
