Teaching Undergraduate-Level Chemistry Using the Cambridge Structural Database: Seeing is Believing

11 June 2025 15:00-16:00, United Kingdom

Introduction
The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) is the world's largest database of over 1.3 million small-molecule organic and metal-organic crystal structures. Along with CCDC tools for crystal structure search, visualization, and analysis, the CSD is used globally to advance scientific research in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials.

The CSD is also invaluable in teaching chemistry—it allows students to see the structure of 3D molecules, explore intermolecular interactions, and gain a deep understanding of structure-property relationships.

In this webinar, Professor Heba Abourahma will talk about how the CSD has been seamlessly integrated into the undergraduate curriculum at The College of New Jersey to enrich the learning experience.

Professor Abourahma will describe how the CSD has been included in three chemistry-based modules, within both lecture and laboratory components, and the benefits it provides for engagement, learning, and gaining transferable skills.

Professor Abourahma will discuss how to use the CSD in teaching:
  • Crystal packing
  • PXRD calculations
  • Intermolecular interactions
  • Molecular Geometry
  • Statistical analysis
